Stockwell & Hendrix Lead Men’s Golf As Puerto Rico Classic Wraps Up
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team finished in 14th place overall at the 25th annual Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Purdue at the Rio Mar Beach & Spa Resort’s River Course in the competitive field on the final day Tuesday. The three-day, 54-hole event saw the Spartans place two in the top 35 of the field that featured 11 teams in the top 50 and four teams in the top 25.
The 17-team field is one of the deepest and competitive fields in all of golf as every team is ranked in the top 100. Also joining the Spartans in the field include No. 48 Alabama, No. 22 Clemson, No. 9 Georgia, No. 28 Georgia Tech, Maryland, No. 47 Middle Tennessee, No. 50 NC State, No. 17 North Carolina, No. 36 Northwestern, Ohio State, No. 15 Mississippi, No. 40 Purdue, No. 42 Kentucky and Virginia Tech.
The Spartans finished with a 28-over par 892 score on the three-day event, with rounds of 301-292-299 to finish in front of Maryland and just three strokes behind No. 48 Alabama No. 22 Clemson won the overall event with a 19-under par 845 (284-276-285), beating No. 9 Georgia by 11 strokes. Luke Schniederjans of Georgia Tech won the individual portion with a 10-under par 206 (68-73-65), defeating Bryson Nimmer of Clemson by one stroke.
Junior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Pinecrest) had the Spartans’ best round of the day, carding a 1-under par 71 to finish in a tie for 32nd place overall. Stockwell posted a 4-over par 220 on the week, opening with a 1-over par 73 in round one, a 4-over par 76 in round two before notching only the second under par round of the week for UNCG. He finished Tuesday with four birdies, three bogeys and 11 par scores.
Sophomore Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) also finished tied for 32nd overall with a 4-over par 220 score. Hendrix opened the week with a 3-over par 75 in round one before turning in his best round of the week Monday with a 1-under par 71. He closed out the week with a 2-over par 74 Tuesday, carding 14 par scores.
Senior Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) finished out the week in a tie for 56th place overall with an 11-over par 227. McGlone opened the week with a 6-over par 78 before rebounding with a 1-over par 73 in round two. He finished out with a 4-over par 76 Tuesday, including four birdies.
Junior Joseph Cansler (Clemmons, N.C./Surry CC) tallied a 58th place finish with a 12-over par 228. He posted rounds of 77-73-78, with his best round also coming Monday in the middle round. Freshman Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) rounded out the lineup in 67th place overall with a 14-over par 230 score (76-75-79).
