Men’s Golf Moves Up To 13th Place After Round Two Of Puerto Rico Classic
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team improved by nine strokes in round two and move up to 13th place at the 25th annual Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Purdue at the Rio Mar Beach & Spa Resort’s River Course in the competitive field. The third and final round will be played Tuesday with the Spartans set for a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. from holes No. 15-18. The 17-team field is one of the deepest and competitive fields in all of golf as every team is ranked in the top 100. The field features 11 teams in the top 50 and four teams in the top 25, highlighted by ninth-ranked Georgia. Also joining the Spartans in the field include No. 48 Alabama, No. 22 Clemson, No. 28 Georgia Tech, Maryland, No. 47 Middle Tennessee, No. 50 NC State, No. 17 North Carolina, No. 36 Northwestern, Ohio State, No. 15 Mississippi, No. 40 Purdue, No. 42 Kentucky and Virginia Tech.
The Spartans are in 13th place overall, tied with No. 48 Alabama with a 17-over par 593. UNCG opened the weekend with a 301 score in round two before posting a 4-over par 292 in round two. The Spartans are just one stroke behind Virginia Tech and three strokes behind No. 15 Mississippi heading into the final day. No. 22 Clemson holds the overall lead with a 16-under par 560 (284-276) while No. 9 Georgia is second at 9-under par 567 (281-286).
Sophomore Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) had the Spartans’ best round Monday, posting a 1-under par 71 to move into a tie for 32nd place overall. Hendrix is 2-over par 146 after 36 holes, recording a 3-over par 75 in round one and a 1-under par 71 in round two. He notched four birdies, three bogeys and 11 par scores on the day, finishing his round with two birdies on the final five holes.
Junior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Pinecrest) sits in a tie for 45th place overall with a 5-over par 149. Stockwell opened with a 1-over par 73 in round one before posting a 4-over par 76 in round two.
Junior Joseph Cansler (Clemmons, N.C./Surry CC) picked up four strokes in round two, notching a 1-over par 73 after carding a 5-over par 77 in round one. Cansler tallied five birdies, four bogeys, a double bogey and eight par scores Monday. He is in 48th place overall with a 6-over par 150.
Senior Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) also improved during his second round, carding a 1-over par 73. McGlone recorded three birdies, four bogeys and 11 par scores as he moved up to 53rd place overall with a 7-over par 151 (78-73). Freshman Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) rounds out the lineup in 53rd place with a 7-over par 151 as he has posted rounds of 76-75 in the first two days.
