CONWAY, S.C.- Entering the day on a four-game winning streak, UNCG softball had its momentum halted Sunday afternoon, falling 12-2 in five innings to Coastal Carolina on the final day of the Battle at the Beach.
Kylie Bouplon (Wilson, N.C./Forsyth County Day) took the loss, allowing seven earned runs on five hits in her 1.2 innings of work. Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) appeared in relief, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing five runs on four hits and three walks.
Coastal blew the game open in the second, scoring nine runs in the frame, all with two outs. Six of those runs came on a pair of three-run home runs by Alexis Alvino and Kailey Mellen.
The Spartans got one back in the top of the fourth, stringing together three straight two-out singles by Alexis Overdiep (Apex, N.C./Apex), Jasmine Palmer (Biltmore Lake, N.C./Florida State) and Rachael McClaskey (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook).
However, CCU came right back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Bazonski walked in the first run of the frame with the bases loaded before surrendering a two-RBI double to Kassidy Smith.
Marisa Sholtes (Albany, N.Y./South Colonie Central) clobbered her third home run in nine at bats to give UNCG another run in the fifth but by then it was too little, too late for the Spartans.
UNCG makes its home debut next weekend, hosting the UNCG Invitational Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 25 and 26. The Spartans will welcome George Washington and Longwood to the UNCG Softball Stadium.
