STATESBORO, Ga. – Marisa Sholtes (Albany, N.Y./South Colonie Central) hit her first career home run as UNCG fell to the No. 15 Tennessee Lady Volunteers on Sunday afternoon. The Spartans dropped the final game of the Eagle Round Robin, 13-1. UNCG falls to 1-3 on the season, while Tennessee improves to 5-0.
Emily Acquaviva (New Hartford, N.Y./Stony Brook) picked up two of UNCG’s four hits in the contest. Gabrielle Cubbage (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) continued to hit well, going 1-for-3 with a double.
Kylie Bouplon (Wilson, N.C./Forsyth County Day) got her first start in the circle for the Spartans. Bouplon tossed 2+ innings, allowing three hits, and five runs to the Lady Volunteers. Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) came on in relief, tossing 3.0 innings, giving up 10 hits and eight runs.
Tennessee jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first half inning. Aubrey Leach jumped on a 3-2 pitch and sent it over the wall in center field to give Tennessee the early lead.
The second inning featured another Tennessee long ball, this one a two-run shot from Scarlet McSwain to give the Lady Vols a 3-0 advantage.
Tennessee doubled up its run total in the top of the third inning, getting three runs on a Megan Geer home run.
The Lady Vols extended their lead in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring three in the fourth, and four in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Sholtes led off the bottom of the fifth inning with her first home run of the season to put UNCG on the board at 13-1. It was the first earned run allowed by Tennessee’s Matty Moss this season.
UNCG is back in action on Friday, Feb. 17 as it takes on Rider and UMKC on the first day of the Battle at the Beach, hosted by Coastal Carolina.
