Men’s Basketball Sees Six-Game Winning Streak Snapped With Loss At Wofford
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNCG men’s basketball team had its six-game winning streak snapped Wednesday night and suffered its first road loss in Southern Conference play as the Spartans dropped a 93-74 contest to Wofford at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Despite the loss, the Spartans remain the lone team in first place in the SoCon with a 7-2 record, sitting a half game in front of Chattanooga, Furman and ETSU at 6-2. The Spartans and Paladins will meet up in Greensboro Saturday afternoon in a battle for first place. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum.
The Spartans (16-6, 7-2 SoCon) finished the game shooting 47.2 percent (25-of-53) from the field and 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from deep. Senior center R.J. White (Frisco, Texas/Frisco) paced the Spartans’ attack by tying his career-high with 26 points in 27 minutes of action. White connected on 10-of-15 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line on the night while grabbing six rebounds.
UNCG was downed by the Wofford offense as the Terriers connected on 54.8 percent (34-of-62) from the field and 44 percent (11-of-25) from 3-point land. Five different Terriers scored in double figures with Eric Garcia leading the way with 20 points and Ryan Sawvell scoring 18 and grabbing nine rebounds.
The teams came out of the gate and traded baskets early on with the Spartans holding a 10-9 lead. Sophomore guard Francis Alonso (Malaga, Spain/Cushing Academy) scored six of the first 10 points for the Spartans before Wofford started to heat up from distance. The Terriers posted an 11-3 run to take a 31-20 lead and forced a UNCG timeout. Sawvell scored 10 points as Wofford hit five early 3-pointers.
The Spartans answered right back with eight straight points from its senior class to narrow the gap to 31-28. Senior guard Diante Baldwin (Greensboro, N.C./High Point Christian) scored four points while White continued to work in the paint with a pair of baskets. Wofford would continue to hit from the outside and Cameron Jackson hit a 15-foot jumper at the buzzer to give Wofford a 41-34 lead at the break.
UNCG opened the second half with a 7-2 run to narrow the gap to two at 43-41. Baldwin hit a 3-pointer in the run while White scored four more points as Wofford did not have an answer down low. Wofford came right back and broke the game open with a 23-5 run to take a 66-46 lead with 10:00 remaining in the game. Jackson scored six points in the run while Matthew Pegram scored four points to give Wofford a 20-point lead.
The Spartans would keep battling and pulled within 12 points a couple of times in the half but Wofford was able to get key baskets to preserve the win. Baldwin finished the game with 18 points and six rebounds as he was 7-of-13 from the field. Alonso added 16 points but only attempted two 3-pointers in the loss, hitting 1-of-3.
