GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s basketball team shot 59.7 percent from the field and dished out 28 assists Wednesday night as the Spartans posted a 96-61 victory over NCAA Division II member Southern Wesleyan at the Greensboro Coliseum. The game was the Spartans’ final home non-conference game of the year as UNCG hits the road for two straight games, beginning Monday night with a meeting at Big South Conference favorites UNC Asheville.

The Spartans improved to 8-3 on the season as they connected on 37-of-62 (59.7%) from the field and 48.1 percent (13-of-27) from 3-point land in the victory. UNCG dished out a season-high 28 assists on 37 made field goals, including 18 assists on 20 first half field goals when the Spartans roared out to a 56-24 advantage.

“We had 18 assists at halftime and I thought we really shared the ball tonight,” head coach Wes Miller said. “The reason why everyone had a chance to score tonight is we played unselfishly and that is something to build on. It is nice to get guys some extended minutes tonight and we were able to work on some things in the second half. It wasn’t our best effort and I thought we played casual throughout the game. This team has a chance to be special and we have to keep that intensity every time on the floor.”

The Spartans had 11 different players score in the victory with all 11 players scoring at least five points. Four different players reached double figures with junior forward Marvin Smith (Richmond, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) leading the way with 15 points in 17 minutes of action. Smith connected on 6-o-10 from the field, dished out three assists and blocked three shots.

Redshirt freshman forward James Dickey (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God) scored a career-high 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench in 18 minutes of play. Dickey connected on 4-of-6 from the field and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Junior forward Jordy Kuiper (Groningen, Netherlands/Canaries Basketball Academy) added 11 points in 19 minutes, as he was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field, helping the Spartans scored 42 points in the paint.

Sophomore guard Demetrius Troy (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God) rounded out the double figure scorers with 10 points, five rebounds and five assists. Senior center R.J. White (Frisco, Texas/Frisco) dished out a career-high six assists to go along with eight points and six rebounds, as he was 3-of-5 from the field. Junior Garrett Collins (Asheville, N.C./Fishburne Military Academy) added seven points off the bench in 12 minutes. Center Lloyd Burgess (Durham, N.C./Christ School) celebrated his birthday Wednesday with six points and four rebounds off the bench on a perfect 3-of-3 shooting from the floor.

Southern Wesleyan (2-7) connected on 40.7 percent (24-of-59) from the field and 37.5 percent (6-of-16) from 3-point land in the loss. The Warriors committed 18 turnovers and were out-rebounded by a 38-28 margin. Darius Sharpe scored 23 points to lead SWU, connecting on 5-of-8 from 3-ppoint land, while Jeremy Wert chipped in nine points and seven rebounds.

The Spartans hit the road for just the second time this season Monday night when they travel to UNC Asheville to face off against the reigning Big South Conference Tournament Champion Bulldogs. Game time is set for 7 p.m. and will be aired on the Big South Network with links at www.uncgspartans.com.
