Menís Basketball Posts Largest Win In Division I Era With 108-56 Rout Of Mars Hill
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s basketball team set records Monday night as the Spartans won their sixth straight game to improve to 7-2 on the season with a 108-56 victory over NCAA Division II team Mars Hill at the Greensboro Coliseum.
The Spartans’ six-game winning streak is their largest streak in non-conference play in program history at the NCAA Division I level and is the largest since winning seven straight games in 2012 in Southern Conference action. UNCG continues its six-game home stretch Friday night when it welcomes in Triad and Atlantic Coast Conference foe Wake Forest to the Greensboro Coliseum. The game is set for 7 p.m. matchup and will air on ESPN3 and the ESPN App.
The 52-point victory is the largest margin of victory for the Spartans in their 25-year history as an NCAA Division I program (38 vs. Greensboro College, 12/16/05). It is also the third-largest margin of victory in the program’s 50-year history, falling short of two victories over Piedmont Bible in 1985 (66) and 1983 (60). Additionally, the Spartans’ 7-2 start is tied for their second-best start in program history, matching the mark of the 2004-05 season and shy of only the 1994-95 campaign, which opened with a 12-2 record.
The Spartans were blistering offensively on the night, connecting on 62.7 percent (37-of-59) from the field and 66.7 percent (18-of-27) from 3-point land in the victory. The 18 made 3-pointers are second most in a single-game in program history, trailing only the 20 made against Chattanooga in 2013. UNCG also dished out 25 assists on its 37 made field goals and connected on 76.2 percent (16-of-21) from the free throw line.
Junior forward Marvin Smith (Richmond, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) scored a career-high 23 points, including tying his career-best mark with 21 first half points. Smith connected on 9-of-10 from the field and 5-of-6 from three-point land while playing just 20 minutes. Sophomore guard Francis Alonso (Malaga, Spain/Cushing Academy) added 16 points in 12 minutes as he was 4-of-6 from distance and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
Sophomore guard Demetrius Troy (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God) added 12 points, five assists, four steals and three rebounds off the bench in 18 minutes of play. Classmate Malik Massey (Charlotte, N.C./New Hampton) scored a career-high 11 points off the bench on 4-of-5 shooting from the field. Senior guard Diante Baldwin (Greensboro, N.C./High Point Christian) added 10 points and seven assists in 18 minutes of play.
Mars Hill, which only lost to Wofford by three points this season, connected on just 33.9 percent (19-of-56) from the field and 30.4 percent (7-of-23) from 3-point land. The Lions committed 26 turnovers in the loss and UNCG converted those miscues into 41 points, including a 20-4 edge on the fast break.
The Spartans scored the game’s first eight points and never looked back, opening to a 50-17 lead with 4:53 remaining in the first half. UNCG out-scored Mars Hill 58-25 in the first half, the highest scoring output of the season. The Spartans hit 66.7 percent (20-of-30) from the field and an astounding 78.6 percent (11-of-14) from 3-point land in the opening 20 minutes of play.
UNCG scored the first 13 points of the second half to take a 71-25 lead with 15:34 remaining.
