Greensboro, N.C. – Head Coach Trina Patterson led the UNCG women’s basketball team to a dominating 77-34 win over Brevard (0-1) in her first game as the Spartans head coach. Bailey Williams (Harrisonburg, Va./Spotswood) led all scorers with 17 points, six rebounds and three assists. Three other Spartans scored in double figures including senior Gena Penick (Amherst, Va./Louisburg) who had a career-best 14 points and seven rebounds. Saturday’s win marked the fewest opponent points allowed in a game in UNCG’s Division 1 era.
The Spartans jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, outscoring the Tornados 22-3 after the first quarter. UNCG held on for a 39-12 lead at halftime.
UNCG held its opponents to 20.8 percent from the field while shooting 43.7 percent and connecting on 9-of-11 free throws. Freshman Alexis Pitchford (Orlando, Fla./Winter Park) paced UNCG with 10 points in the half.
The Tornados had their most offensive period in the third quarter, scoring 12 points but UNCG also had an offensive frame scoring a game-high 26 points. Shanese Harris (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) had nine points while Penick added seven of her own in the frame.
UNCG went on to outscore Brevard 12-8 in the final frame. Senior India Timpton (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) had five of her 11 rebounds in the fourth quarter as UNCG cruised to a 43-point victory.
The Spartans out-rebounded Brevard 52-27 and forced 23 Tornado turnovers. UNCG shot 43.5 percent overall in the win while holding BC to 29.4 percent. UNCG shot 26.3 percent from three-point range with Williams shooting 3-for-7. Brevard made just one trey in the contest and was held to 5.3 percent (1-for-19) behind the arc.
UNCG leads the all-time series, 1-0, against Brevard. The Spartans return to action Monday, November 14, when they face UNC Asheville at 5:30 p.m. inside Fleming Gymnasium.
