Three Spartans Earn Double-Digit Kills in Victory Over The Citadel
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Spartan volleyball earned a 3-1 (25-17, 25-16, 22-25, 25-15) over The Citadel Bulldogs on Friday night in Fleming Gymnasium. UNCG has now won seven consecutive matches, and nine of its last ten. The Spartans improve to 15-10 overall, and 9-3 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel falls to 8-21, and 1-12 in the SoCon.
Ashley Muench (Hurdle Mills, N.C./Orange) led the Spartan attack, earning 16 kills on the night. Jasmine Jones (Stafford, Va./Brook Point) added 13 kills, hitting at a .333 clip. Alexis Mourier (Elkview, W.Va./George Washington) earned 10 kills.
Allison Penner (Aurora, Neb./Aurora) earned her 10th double-double this season, earning 42 assists and 10 digs.
Christina Gregory (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) earned a match-best 19 digs in the contest, adding three assists and a kill. Muench chipped in 18 digs to earn her ninth double-double of the season. Anna Romaniszyn (Port Orange, Fla./Spruce Creek) added 10 digs.
UNCG and The Citadel started the first set evenly, tying at 12 before the Spartans could gain some separation. UNCG went on a 6-0 run to take an 18-12 lead in the set. UNCG was aided by kills form Muench and Mourier, as well as an attack and kill from Gregory. The Spartans were able to trade points with the Bulldogs down the stretch and took the first set 25-17 on a Muench kill. The Spartans hit at a .389 average during the set.
The Spartans were able to gain separation earlier in the second set. UNCG used an 8-2 run to take a 12-6 lead early. The Bulldogs were unable to come closer than four points at 17-13, following a Jen Barbot kill. UNCG closed the set out on another 8-2 run, with kills from Muench, Chinwendu Ngwadom (Raleigh, N.C./Chicago State), Penner, and Jones.
The Bulldogs were able to fight for a set victory following the intermission. UNCG took an early 10-5 lead before The Citadel was able to stop the Spartan rally. UNCG was able to maintain a lead until the 18-point mark. Prior to that, the Spartans first won an appeal call on a Bulldog attack. The call was appealed by The Citadel eventually ruled a replay. Following that call, The Citadel used a 6-0 run to take a 20-18 lead. UNCG and the Bulldogs exchanged points down the stretch, as the Bulldogs were able to take the third set 25-22.
The Spartans were able to get back into form in the fourth set. UNCG led by as many as ten points on four different occasions throughout the match. UNCG closed the match out, scoring the final two points on a kill from Jessica Brezwyn (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) and a Bulldog attack error.
UNCG is back in action tomorrow evening as it hosts the Mercer Bears at 5:00 in Fleming Gymnasium. Tomorrow night’s match is senior night, and there will be a pregame ceremony that will honor our four seniors.
