Dan Loats enters his first season as the Spartans' student assistant coach. Voted a team captain in 2018, Loats was a standout pitcher for the Spartans after transferring from North Iowa Area Community College. He will assist the pitching staff and with program administration.
Loats posted an 8-3 record in 2017, which was the best winning percentage on the staff. He also recorded the series-clinching save against Furman in the 2017 SoCon Championship Game. Loats overcame cancer and cancer treatment to return to the mound in 2018. He threw more than 100 innings in his two seasons for UNCG. His toughness and character was an inspiration to the Spartans baseball program.
Loats will graduate in the spring of 2019 with a degree in Sociology.

2018 (Senior): Appeared in 13 games and made six starts … Earned a 4.67 ERA in 27.0 innings ... Struck out 22 hitters throughout the season … Logged a season-high 5.0 innings against Lipscomb (Mar. 18), striking out two hitters … Struck out five hitters in a 3.0 inning start against VMI (Mar. 25) … Logged 4.2 innings in a start against North Carolina A&T (Apr. 2), striking out a season-high five hitters … Allowed one or zero earned runs in eight appearances … In his first two outings of the season, went a combined 3.1 innings without allowing a run … Didn’t allow a hit or an earned run in a 3.0 inning start against Elon (Mar. 7) … Went an inning in relief against Western Carolina (Apr. 8) without allowing a run.
2017 (Junior): Pitched in 17 games, making 14 starts… Earned an 8-3 record and notched two saves in 82.1 innings… Earned a 5.25 ERA and struck out 77 hitters… Eight wins were the most of any pitcher on the UNCG staff and the .727 winning percentage was best on the team… Worked as the midweek starter and long relief out of the bullpen until moving into the weekend rotation against Furman (Apr. 9)… Went a season-long 6.2 innings while earning the victory over Mercer (Apr. 30)… Struck out a season-high nine batters while earning the win over Wofford (Apr. 15)… Earned his first win after logging a quality start against Lafayette and struck out four hitters (Mar. 18)… Logged a quality start and his second win against Furman, striking out four hitters (Apr. 9)… Earned another quality start and his seventh win after going 6.0 innings, allowing one earned run with two strikeouts over Samford (May 20)… Earned his first save after going 4.0 innings in relief, allowing two hits and striking out six batters against Princeton (Mar. 12)… Notched his second save after throwing 1.2 innings allowing two hits helping UNCG capture the Southern Conference Tournament Championship (May 28)… Worked into the seventh inning and struck out four hitters in the season finale in the NCAA Clemson Regional (June 4).
NIACC: Helped the NIACC Trojans to a 47-16 record in 2015… Iowa Community College Athletic Conference second team all-region… Holds NIACC career record in strikeouts… NIACC single season record for wins… NIACC career innings pitched record… 2015 and 2014 fall all-region… 2016 spring all region second team… 2015 spring all region first team… Appeared in 14 games in 2016… Earned an 11-2 record… After defeating Southeastern in the NJCAA Region XI tournament, he became the first NIACC to win ten games in a single season… Earned ICCAC Pitcher of the Week for April 4-10 after a complete game victory, striking out seven, and in his second appearance allowed one hit and struck out 12 earning the victory… Pitched against GateWay CC in the opening round of the NJCAA Division II World Series… As a freshman, started 13 games, making one relief appearance… Earned a 4-5 record, and a 3.97 ERA… Struck out 56 batters in 65.2 innings.
