Menís Golf Sits In Sixth After 36-Holes Of The Bridgestone Golf Collegiate

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team turned its best two rounds of the fall and sits in sixth place as the highly competitive Bridgestone Golf Collegiate Sunday at Grandover Resort. The Spartans have two players within two strokes of the individual lead in senior Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) and sophomore Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley).

The Spartans’ second round score of 279 is the lowest round this season and the lowest for UNCG since posting a 278 score in the second round of the AutoTrader.com Collegiate in October of 2014. The teams will play the third and final round Monday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start with UNCG set to begin on holes No. 4-7. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstatresults.com.

The 13-team field features nine teams ranked in the top 100 and four teams in the top 40 by Golf Stat. Joining the Spartans in the challenging field includes No. 20 Duke, No. 32 Purdue, No. 34 Liberty, No. 38 Northwestern, No. 55 Virginia Tech, No. 62 NC State, No. 65 Iowa Sate, No. 91 Georgia State, No. 94 Utah, Kansas State, VCU and Davidson.

The Spartans sit at 14-under par 562 after posting rounds of 283 and 279 on the unseasonably warm Sunday on the West Course. No. 20 Duke holds the tam lead at 26-under par 550 as the Blue Devils opened with a 283 in round one before carding stellar 267 in round two. No. 38 Northwestern is second at 19-under par 557 (283-274) while No. 65 Iowa State and No. 38 Liberty at tied for third at 17-under par 559.

There is a three-way tie atop the individual leaderboard after 36-holes. Ruben Sondjaja of Iowa State, Nick Budd of Georgia State and Chandler Eaton of Duke are tied at 8-under par 136. Eaton posted the lowest round of the day with a 7-under par 65 in the second round while Sondjaja opened the tournament with a 6-under par 66 in round one.

McGlone leads the Spartans in a tie for fourth place overall, just one shot out of the lead at 7-under par 137. He opened with a 3-under par 69 in round one before carding a 4-under par 68 in round two. He was tied for the overall lead with 13 birdies in the first 36-holes and also shot 5-under par on the par-5 holes Sunday, ranking 12th in the field. He tallied six birdies in his second round, including closing the day with back-to-back birdies on holes No. 1-2.

Hendrix is tied for seventh overall, just two shots out of the lead at 6-under par 138. He opened the day with a 1-under par 71 in round one before posting a 5-under par 67 in round two. His 67 score is the lowest of the season and his second-lowest score of his career, trailing only a 66 shot last year at the Linger Longer. Hendrix was tied for first overall in the field with 13 birdies and also held the lead in the field with a 7-under score on par-5’s Sunday. He tallied eight birdies in his second round to end day one in impressive fashion.

Junior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Pinecrest) is tied for 31st overall at 1-under par 143. Stockwell opened with a 1-under par 71 in round one before carding an even-par 72 in round two. He posted 23 par scores and seven birdies in the first 36-holes of the Bridgestone.

Freshman Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) finished at even-par 144 and is tied for 37th overall. He tallied 26 par scores, ranking second in the field as he recorded back-to-back rounds of even-par 72. Junior Joseph Cansler (Clemmons, N.C./Surry CC) rounded out the lineup in 53rd place with a 4-over par 148 as he tallied back-to-back rounds of 74. Cansler’s highlight came in round one as he posted an eagle-3 on the par-5 hole No. 6.

The Spartans played four individuals Sunday with sophomore Mark Johnston (Lewisville, N.C./West Forsyth) leading the way with a 7-over par 151 (76-75). Freshman Ben Buben (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) made his collegiate debut and opened with an 8-over par 80 in round one before rebounding with and even-par 72 to sit in 68th place with a 152. Freshman Michael Wicker (Rougemount, N.C./North Durham) is in 78th place with a 12-over par 156 (77-79) while freshman Michael Wicker (Rougemount, N.C./North Durham) is in 79th place at 13-over par 157 (79-78).
