Women’s Golf Closes Out Fall With 16th Place Finish At Palmetto Intercollegiate
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team wrapped up the fall season Tuesday afternoon finishing 16th overall at the Palmetto Intercollegiate hosted by the College of Charleston at the Kiawah Island Report Turtle Point Golf Course. The Spartan will be off until Feb. 4 when they begin the spring season at the Lady Bulldog Individual.
The Spartans finished the week in 16th place with a 71-over par 935 as they posted scores of 312-309-314. Campbell came from behind to win the Palmetto with a 15-over par 879 score (300-286-293) to beat Coastal Carolina by two strokes. Katy Harris of Mississippi was the individual winner at 4-under par 212 (73-70-69) as only two golfers finished under par in the three-day tournament.
Freshmen Kendall Dobbins (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) was the Spartans’ top finisher at the Palmetto, placing 55th overall. Dobbins recorded a 17-over par 233 score as she was consistent with rounds of 77-79-77. She tallied a team-high 12 par scores in the final round while adding a pair of birdies.
"It was my first time going to Kiawah and it was a great experience," Dobbins said. "There were high winds but we had some great weather. My putting was really good over the three rounds and I can't wait to see how we do in the spring season."
Freshman Louisa Tichy (Germering, Germany/Max-Born Gymnasium) had the Spartans’ low round of the day Tuesday, posting a 2-over par 74. Tichy recorded 10 par scores and three birdies to close out her fall with a strong round. She finished in 85th place overall with a 28-over par 244 (86-84-74).
Junior Lexi Kershaw (Winston-Salem, N.C./Catawba) closed out the week in a tie for 66th place overall. Kershaw finished 21-over par 237 as she opened with two strong rounds of 4-over par 76 and 1-over par 73 before notching a 16-over par 88 in round three.
Sophomore Natalia Asensio (Madrid, Spain/Cardenal Spinola) placed 72d overall with a 23-over par 239 score, carding rounds of 76-82-81. Senior Kristin Powers (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) rounded out the lineup in 75th place with a 24-over par 240 (83-75-82).
The Spartans were joined in the tournament by host College of Charleston, Augusta, Boston University, Campbell, Charleston Southern, Chattanooga, Coastal Carolina, Daytona State, Elon, East Tennessee State, Illinois State, Kennesaw State, Mercer, Mississippi, North Florida, Northern Arizona, South Florida, Troy and Xavier.
