Women’s Golf 15th After Round One At Palmetto Intercollegiate
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team posted a 24-over par 312 score in the first round of the Palmetto Intercollegiate hosted by the College of Charleston at the Kiawah Island Report Turtle Point Golf Course. Round two of the tournament will be played Monday with the Spartans set for tee times on hole No. 1 between 8:52-9:28 a.m. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstatresults.com.
The Spartans sit in 15th place overall in the 20-team field while Ole Miss holds the team lead at 2-over par 290. Chattanooga and Coastal Carolina are tied for second at 4-over par 292. Three players are tied for the team lead at 2-under par 70 while only four players total shot under par in the first round Sunday.
Junior Lexi Kershaw (Winston-Salem, N.C./Catawba) is tied for 34th overall after carding a 4-over par 76 in round one. Kershaw finished tied for the team-lead with four birdies while posting eight par scores on Sunday.
“Today I got off to a rough start but managed to save a pretty good round,” Kershaw said. “I went through a lot of ups and downs out there but was able to bounce back really well and finish strong. I have learned a lot to take into the next two days.”
Sophomore Natalia Asensio (Madrid, Spain/Cardenal Spinola) also posted a 4-over par 76 score as she led the team with 10 par scores and notched two birdies.
“I did a great job at recovering today,” Asensio said. “I put myself into some trouble, but didn’t walk out with more than a bogey. I am happy with how I fought today and excited about tomorrow.”
Freshmen Kendall Dobbins (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) is tied for 46th overall at 5-over par 77. Dobbins posted a team-high four birdies to go along with six par scores. Senior Kristin Powers (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) sits in 90th place overall with an 11-over par 83 while freshman Louisa Tichy (Germering, Germany/Max-Born Gymnasium) recorded a 14-over par 86 to round out the lineup.
Joining the Spartans in the tournament include host College of Charleston, Augusta, Boston University, Campbell, Charleston Southern, Chattanooga, Coastal Carolina, Daytona State, Elon, East Tennessee State, Illinois State, Kennesaw State, Mercer, Mississippi, North Florida, Northern Arizona, South Florida, Troy and Xavier.
