GREENSBORO, N.C. – In a must-win situation for UNCG’s women’s soccer team to avoid having to play the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament Wednesday, the Spartans produced a thrilling 1-0 victory over Chattanooga Sunday afternoon. Prior to the start of the match, UNCG recognized its six graduating Spartans in a Senior Day ceremony where the seniors were presented their jerseys and flowers.
UNCG (7-10-2) finished the regular conference season 4-4-1 tied with Chattanooga but with the victory over the Mocs earned the No. 5 seed in the SoCon Tournament. It was the perfect sendoff for UNCG’s six seniors who played their final match at the UNCG Soccer Stadium while never surrendering a goal to the Mocs during their careers.
The two battled in the opening half with each team having seven shots apiece after the opening 45 minutes. It wasn’t until the 61st minute that UNCG would take the lead when Lauren Daniels (Clayton, N.C./Clayton) scored her first career goal, a header, on a pass from Cienna Rideout (Henderson, Nev./Coronado).
Chloe Buehler (Perrysburg, Ohio/Penn State) made eight saves in her sixth solo shutout of the season. Overall, the Spartans edged UTC 13-11 in shots and 4-3 in corner kicks. Chattanooga committed 11 fouls in the 90 minutes of action while UNCG had three.
UNCG improves to 17-3-1 all-time against the Mocs and has won the last 10 meetings. Sunday’s win marked the fifth straight shutout over Chattanooga, meaning the senior class has never surrendered a goal to UTC in four meetings.
The Spartans have almost a week to prepare for their Southern Conference quarterfinal match against Furman. UNCG earned the No. 5 seed and will travel to Greenville, S.C., Saturday, October 29, to face No. 4 Furman at 2 p.m. When the two met earlier in the regular season, the Spartans shutout the Paladins, 4-0, at home. Last time they met in the postseason, Furman ended UNCG’s season on a last second goal in the 2015 semifinals en route to winning the SoCon Tournament Title in Greenville.
