Volleyball Sweeps Wofford to Start Homecoming Weekend
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Ashley Muench (Hurdle Mills, N.C./Orange) led the Spartans in kills and digs as the Spartans earned their second sweep of the Wofford Terriers on Friday evening. UNCG improves to 12-10 overall, and 6-3 in the Southern Conference with the 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-14) victory. Wofford falls to 12-12, and 5-5 in the SoCon.
Muench earned her seventh double-double of the season as she led the Spartans with 15 kills, and 17 digs. Lauren Robeck (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) earned 10 kills, hitting at a .500 average in the victory.
The first set started 1-0 in favor of the Terriers, but that lead was quickly erased. It would be the only time that Wofford would lead throughout all three sets. The Terriers were within striking distance in the first set, as UNCG led 9-8. The Spartans then went on a 4-1 run to separate and take a 13-9 lead. UNCG continued to double-up Wofford and soon led 20-13. The Blue and Gold finished the set scoring five of the final six points as Ronni Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill./West Chicago) served up an ace on set point for the victory.
After being tied at 4-4 in the second set, UNCG used a 7-0 run to gain an advantage. Wofford came within two at 20-18 after a kill from Lauren Miller. That run woke up the Spartans who closed the set out on a 5-0 run. Muench, Jessica Brezwyn (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) and Anna Romaniszyn (Port Orange, Fla./Spruce Creek) each added kills before a Bijonae Jones attack error gave UNCG the set.
UNCG stormed out to a 4-0 lead before giving up a point to the Terriers in the third set. The Spartans lead by 12, at 16-4 as the Terriers used both timeouts to try to slow the Spartans down. UNCG and Wofford exchanged points down the stretch as UNCG held on to its 11-point advantage. Kills from Katie Wagner (Knoxville, Tenn./Hardin Valley Academy) and Muench helped put the set away and give the Spartans the victory.
The Spartans return to action Friday, Oct. 28 against the Western Carolina Catamounts in Cullowhee, N.C. with first serve set for 6:00 p.m.
