Menís Golf Finishes 10th At AutoTrader.com Collegiate
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team finished 10th overall at the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic Tuesday, hosted by Georgia State at the Berkeley Hills Golf Course. The Spartans return to action October 30 when they host the prestigious Bridgestone Golf Collegiate at Grandover Resort for the two-day, 54-hole event.
The Spartans finished 12-over par 876 in the 54-hole event, posting rounds of 298-289-289. No. 25 Mississippi won the event by 15 strokes as the Rebels posted a 33-under par 831 with rounds of 276-274-281. Braden Thornberry of Ole Miss won the individual event with an 18-under par 198, carding rounds of 68-64-66 to win by eight strokes.
Junior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) was the Spartans’ top finisher in a tie for 28th place overall. Stockwell posted a 1-over par 217 score as he opened with a 1-over par 73 before carding back-to-back rounds of even-par 72. He finished fifth overall in the field with 40 par scores on the 54-hole event, including 12 pars, three birdies and three bogeys in the final round Tuesday.
Sophomore Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) continued his strong play after a tough first round and finished in 44th place at 4-over par 220. Hendrix opened with an 8-over par 80 before posting consecutive rounds of 2-under par 70 scores. He finished the final round with 10 par scores, five birdies and three bogeys. It marked the third time in the last four rounds he has recorded a 70 score.
Freshman Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) moved up to 49th place overall with a 5-over par 221 score. Brightwell opened with a 4-over par 76 in round one and a 2-over par 74 in round two before matching his career-low with a 1-under par 71 Tuesday. He tallied 13 pars, three birdies and two bogeys in the final round.
Junior Joseph Cansler (Clemmons/Surry CC) placed 53rd overall with a 7-over par 223 score with rounds of 74-73-76. Senior Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) finished 71st overall with a 13-over par 229 (75-75-79) while freshman Michael Wicker (Rougemount, N.C./North Durham) placed 83rd as an individual with a 30-over par 246 (84-83-79).
Joining the No. 92 Spartans in the field includes host No. 97 Georgia State, Chattanooga, Georgia Southern, No. 82 South Florida, No. 25 Mississippi, No. 81 Lipscomb, No. 73 Troy, No. 53 Middle Tennessee, Yale, Francis Marion, Richmond, Winthrop and No. 34 Kennesaw State.
