Menís Golf Sits In 11th After Day One At AutoTrader.com Collegiate
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team sits in 11th place after 36-holes of the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic Monday, hosted by Georgia State at the Berkeley Hills Golf Course. The final round of the two-day tournament will be played Tuesday with the Spartans set for tee times from hole No. 10 between 8:50-9:30 a.m. Live scoring will be available via www.golfstatresults.com.
The Spartans posted an 11-over par 587 score for the two rounds as they opened with a 298 in round one before posting a 289 in round two. No. 25 Mississippi holds the overall lead by 11 strokes over No. 82 USF as the Rebels posted a 26-under par 550 with rounds of 276 and 274. Braden Thornberry of Ole Miss holds the overall lead at 12-under par 132 as he carded rounds of 68 and 64.
Junior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) led the Spartans on the first day with a 1-over par 145 score to sit in 28th place overall. Stockwell opened the day with a 1-over par 73 before posting an even-par 72 in round two. He tallied 12 par scores in round one before posting 16 pars in round two for a total of 28 pars in the first 36 holes.
Junior Joseph Cansler (Clemmons/Surry CC) sits in a tie for 45th overall at 3-over par 147. Cansler opened the day with a 2-over par 74 before posting a 1-over par 73 in round two.
Three Spartans are tied for 60th place overall at 6-over par 150 in sophomore Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley), freshman Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) and senior Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin).
Hendrix opened the day with a tough 8-over par 80 in round one but rebounded with a 2-under par 70 in round two, the Spartans’ lowest round of the day. He recorded 12 par scores to go along with four birdies and two bogeys in his second round.
Brightwell opened the day with a 4-over par 76 in round one before trimming two strokes and carding a 2-over par 74 in round two. He tallied three bogeys, one birdie and 15 par scores in round two. McGlone was consistent with back-to-back rounds of 3-over par 75. His day was highlighted by an eagle-3 on the par-5 hole No. 10. Freshman Michael Wicker (Rougemount, N.C./North Durham) played as an individual and posted rounds of 84-83.
Joining the No. 92 Spartans in the field includes host No. 97 Georgia State, Chattanooga, Georgia Southern, No. 82 South Florida, No. 25 Mississippi, No. 81 Lipscomb, No. 73 Troy, No. 53 Middle Tennessee, Yale, Francis Marion, Richmond, Winthrop and No. 34 Kennesaw State.
