GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team sits in 11th place after the first two rounds Bill Berg Invitational at The Ridges Country Club in Hayesville, N.C., hosted by Western Carolina Monday afternoon. The third round will be played Tuesday with a 9 a.m. shotgun start with live scoring will be available at www.birdiefire.com.
The Spartans are 60-over par 636 after notching scores of 317 and 319 in the first two rounds of the event. Eastern Kentucky took over the team lead at 17-over par 593 after recording rounds of 300 and 293 Monday. Laura Gomez of James Madison is the only golfer under par after 36-holes as she holds the individual lead at 2-under par 142 (70-72).
Sophomore Natalia Asensio (Madrid, Spain/Cardenal Spinola) is the top Spartan after two rounds in a tie for 26th palce overall. Asensio boasts an 11-over par 155 score as she has been consistent with a 5-over par 77 in round one and a 6-over par 78 in round two. She tallied 10 par scores and a pair of birdies on the day Monday.
Junior Lexi Kershaw (Winston-Salem, N.C./Catawba) dropped down to 43rd place overall with a 16-over par 160. Kershaw opened the week with a 5-over par 77 but notched an 11-over par 83 in round two.
Freshmen Kendall Dobbins (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) and Louisa Tichy (Germering, Germany/Max-Born Gymnasium are still tied at 47th overall at 18-over par 162. Both golfers opened with 11-over par 83 scores in round one before rebounding with 7-over par 79 scores in round two Monday.
Senior Kristin Powers (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) rounds out the lineup in 56th place with a 25-over par 169 scores after rounds of 80-89. Senior Emily Kurey (Alpharetta, Ga./Louisville) is in 61st place as an individual with a 28-over par 172 (92-80).
Including the Spartans, 12-team field includes a pair of fellow Southern Conference members, Western Carolina and Wofford. Rounding out the competition are Appalachian State, Eastern Kentucky, Gardner-Webb, James Madison, Longwood, Marshall, Presbyterian, Radford, and UNC Asheville.
