Muench's Double-Double Leads the Spartans Over Samford
Muench led the Spartans with 16 kills, while earning 22 digs during the match. Jessica Brezwyn (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) earned 15 kills, hitting at a .424 average. Jasmine Jones (Stafford, Va./Brook Point) earned 11 kills, hitting at a .562 average and leading the team with four block assists. Alexis Mourier also topped the 10-kill mark, earning 10 kills while hitting at a .360 average.
Allison Penner (Aurora, Neb./Aurora) led the team with 54 of the 61 team assists. Anna Romaniszyn (Port Orange, Fla./Spruce Creek) earned 11 digs as the Spartan defense earned 84 digs on the night. The Spartan defense earned 30 digs in the third set, the most in any set this season. Christina Gregory (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) led all competitors with 28 digs in the match.
In the first set, the Bulldogs were able to gain a three-point advantage at 16-13 following a block assist from T.J. Russell and Gabbi Greenwald. The Spartans kept the match close the rest of the way before a kill from Kate Neisler and an attack error by Penner gave the Bulldogs the first set.
After being tied 15 in the second set, UNCG used a 5-0 run to take a lead. The Spartans were aided by a kill from Muench, two Samford attack errors, and a block assist from Jones and Penner to take the lead. The Spartans extended their lead to as many as six points following a block assist from Jones and Mourier. Samford came as close as three points following back-to-back kills from Erin Bognar. Mourier finished off the set with her eighth kill of the match to give UNCG its first win.
The third set was back-and-forth with no team leading by more than four points. UNCG had an 11-7 lead before Samford was able to tie it up at 21 all. The Bulldogs then grabbed a 23-21 lead before UNCG was able to tie it up at 23, 24, and 25. Three-straight Spartan kills from Brezwyn and Lauren Robeck (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) gave UNCG the victory and the lead.
The Navy and Gold jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the third set and never surrendered the lead. Samford came back within two points at 10-8 before UNCG extended its lead back out to 15-9. The Spartans were aided by kills from Jones and a service ace from Robeck. Samford cut the lead to within two at 24-22 before a kill from Romaniszyn gave the Spartans the set and the match.
UNCG returns to action tomorrow evening as it hosts the Chattanooga Mocs at Fleming Gymnasium at 5:00.
