GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG junior women's golfer Lexi Kershaw (Winston-Salem, N.C./Catawba) finished in a tie for 19th place and the Spartans as a team finished 17th overall at the Pinehurst Challenge hosted by the College of Charleston at Pinehurst No. 1 Tuesday. The Spartans return to action Oct. 16-18 at the Bill Berg Invitational hosted at The Ridges Golf Course in Hayesville, N.C.
Kershaw finished the two-day event with a 6-over par 22 score. She opened the week with a 6-over par 78 in round one before recording back-to-back even-par scores of 72. In her final round Tuesday, she carded 11 par scores, two birdies, four bogeys and an eagle-3 on the par-5 hole No. 4.
"This was an overall solid tournament and I did a lot of really good things the past couple of days," Kershaw said. "This isn't the finish we wanted as a team, but we are so close to being great. We are all hitting so many good shots and it is going to come together for us all real soon. I am so excited to see what we can do in the next couple of weeks."
UNCG as a team finished 17th overall with a 56-over par 920 score (312-304-304). East Carolina won the event by seven strokes with a 3-under par 861 score (295-277-289), topping second-place Auburn. Lisa Petterson of ECU won the individual event with an 8-under par 208 score (72-65-71).
Freshman Kendall Dobbins (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) finished in a tie for 56th overall with a 13-over par 229 score. Dobbins opened the week with an 8-over par 80 in round one before posting a career-low even-par 72 in round two. She closed out the event with a 5-over par 77 score as she notched 10 pars and two birdies.
Senior Kristin Powers (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) placed 79th overall with a 19-over par 235 score. Powers tallied a 5-over par 77 in rounds one and three, surrounding a 9-pver par 81 in round two. She recorded 10 par scores and two birdies in the final round.
Freshman Louisa Tichy (Germering, Germany/Max-Born Gymnasium) improved up to 84th place overall with a 21-over par 237 as she tallied rounds of 80-79-78. Sophomore Natalia Asensio (Madrid, Spain/Cardenal Spinola) rounded out the lineup in 91st place with a 26-over par 242 score (77-82-83).
