GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG senior men's golfer Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) finished in a tie for first and the Spartans as a team placed third in the rain-shortened Tar Heel Intercollegiate hosted at the Finley Golf Course. The event was shortened to just two rounds played Friday as the final round was cancelled due to torrential rains from Hurricane Matthew in Chapel Hill.
UNCG finished just five strokes out of the team lead after recording a 3-under par 573 score Friday. The Spartans opened with a 5-over par 293 score in round one before turning up the heat in round two. UNCG carded the lowest round of the tournament with an 8-under par 280 score as all five in the lineup were par or better. The 280 score is the lowest round for the Spartans since posting a 278 in the second round of the Auto Trader Collegiate in October of 2013. UNCG is currently tied with Maryland for third place and trails only UNCW (567) and host North Carolina (570).
McGlone finishes tied for individual lead at 6-under par 138 with Alfredo Ruiz of Coastal Carolina (68-70). This marks his second career victory after tying for the top spot at the Tiger Invitational last season. McGlone opened the day with a 1-under par 71 score in round one as he carded four birdies, three bogeys and 11 par scores. He followed that up with a 5-under par 67 score, tying his career low round set in 2015 at the Rod Myers Invitational. McGlone was flawless in the second round with 14 pars, three birdies and an eagle-3 on the par-5 hole No. 17. His 67 score was the lowest round of the tournament on day one. He led the field in par-4 scoring Friday, shooting the holes at 5-under par, an average of 3.75 strokes per hole.
Sophomore Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) continues his strong play this week as he followed up two good rounds as the Wolfpack Fall event with two strong rounds on day one at the Tar Heel. Hendrix is tied for 23rd place overall at even-par 144. He opened the day with a 2-over par 74 before coming home with a 2-under par 70 in round two. In round one, Hendrix posted 15 par scores while in round two he carded six birdies and eight pars.
Junior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) sits in a tie for 30th overall at 2-over par 146. Stockwell opened with a 4-over par 75 in round one before notching a 1-under par 71 in round two. He posted 14 pars, three birdies and a double bogey in the second round.
Junior Joseph Cansler (Clemmons/Surry CC) rounds out the lineup in a tie for 37th place overall. Cansler sits at 3-over par 147 as he opened with a 3-over par 75 in round one before posting an even-par 72 in round two. He notched four birdies, four bogeys and 10 par scores in his second round.
Senior Riley Davis (Kinston, N.C./UNC Pembroke) and sophomore Mark Johnston (Lewisville, N.C./West Forsyth) played as individuals Friday. Davis posted a career-low 2-under par 70 in round two and sits in a tie for 46th place overall with a 5-over par 149. Johnston is tied for 70th place overall with a 13-over par 157 score.
Joining the Spartans in the field includes host North Carolina, Coastal Carolina, Elon, Furman, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Liberty, Maryland, UNCW, North Florida, VCU and Virginia Tech.
