GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's golf team sits in a tie for second place after 36-holes of the Starmount Forest Fall Classic Monday as the Spartans had four players finish in the top 20 and all five in the lineup were in the top 22. The third and final round will be play Tuesday with a 9 a.m. shotgun start as UNCG will go from holes No. 1-5. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstatresults.com.
UNCG posted a 48-over par 616 score on the day, opening with a 310 in round one before cutting four strokes in round two at 306. The Spartans are tied with Winthrop (313-303) and hold a seven-stroke lead over fourth-place Marshall at 623. Tennessee Tech holds the team lead at 35-over par 603 as it opened with a 306 in round one before posting the top round of the day with a 297 in round two.
Sophomore Lexi Kershaw (Winston-Salem, N.C./Catawba) sits alone in third place after two rounds, just three shots out of the overall lead. Kershaw posted a 7-over par 149 score as she opened with a 2-over par 73 in round one and a 5-over par 76 in round two. She recorded three birdies in the opening round and carded a tournament-best 23 pars in the first 36 holes. She also posted the best scoring of the day on the par-4 holes, playing them at a 4-over par clip.
Holly Sadler of Tennessee Tech holds the individual lead with a 4-over par 146 as she posted rounds of 74-72. Ashley Sloup of Winthrop is second at 5-over par 147 as she carded a 5-over par 76 in round one before notching the low round of the day with an even-par 71 in round two.
Sophomore Natalia Asensio (Madrid, Spain/Cardenal Spinola) finished Monday in a tie for 13th place overall with a 13-over par 155 score. Asensio started the day with a tough 10-over par 81 score but rebounded nicely with a 3-over par 74 in round two. She tallied two birdies, five bogeys and 11 par scores in her second round score.
"I was really happy with the way I kept my game together after not having the best first round," Asensio said. "I am excited to see what the team can do tomorrow."
Freshman Louisa Tichy (Germering, Germany/Max-Born Gymnasium) sits in a tie for 17th place overall with a 14-over par 156. Tichy posted back-to-back rounds of 7-over 78 as she was third in the field with 22 par scores. Senior Kristin Powers (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) also carded 22 par scores in the first 36 holes as she turned in a 20th place showing with a 15-over par 157. Powers tallied an 8-over par 79 in round one before finishing with a 7-over par 78 in round two.
Freshmen Kendall Dobbins (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) rounded out the lineup in 22nd place with a 16-over par 158. Dobbins opened the event with a 9-over par 80 in round one before coming back with a 7-over par 78 in round two as she also finished third overall with 22 pars. Senior Emily Kurey (Alpharetta, Ga./Louisville) played as an individual and turned in a 31-over par 173 (94-79) to post a 56th place showing.
Joining the Spartans in the field includes Boston, The Citadel, Marshall, N.C. A&T, Queens, Radford, Tennessee Tech, UNC Asheville, Virginia Tech, William & Mary and Winthrop.
