Cary, N.C. – After nearly two week's rest the UNCG men's and women's cross country teams were back on the course Friday afternoon at the adidas Cross Country Challenge in Cary. The collegiate races, which took place Friday at the WakeMed Soccer Park Cross Country Course, were hosted by North Carolina State.
On the men's side Luke Sumerford (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) was the top finisher for UNCG clocking an 18:42.1 on the 6,000-meter course. He helped the Spartans to a seventh place finish out of 12 teams. Rounding out the top-five finisher for UNCG were Patrick O'Grady (Roswell, Ga./Blessed Trinity), William Sandin (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton), Dakarai Shipp (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) and Brandon King (Burnsville, N.C./Mitchell).
Katherine Link (Avon, Ohio/Avon Lake) was the first Spartan to cross the line on the women's side. She ran a 17:59.7 on the 5,000-meter course and placed 21st overall.
Taylor Delaney (Hope Mills, N.C./South View) and Katlyn Adkins (Fayetteville, N.C./Terry Sanford) finished second and third for UNCG turning in times of 18:26.8 and 20:58.0, respectively. Sarah Desantis (Hope Mills, N.C./South View) was the fourth to cross the line and Kelsey Barrett (New Market, Ala./Buckhorn) rounded out UNCG's top-five.
The women's team placed tenth overall, just behind High Point.
The Spartans will have two weeks rest before returning to action at the Joe Piane Invitational hosted by Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., September 30.
