GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's golf team climbed one spot to finish third overall at the William & Mary Invitational Monday afternoon on the River Course at Kingsmill Resort. The Spartans saw all five in the starting lineup finish in the top 21 of the event individual to lead UNCG to its top 54-hole finish since April of 2013. The Spartans return to action Oct. 3-4 when they host the Starmount Forest Fall Classic.
The Spartans posted a three-round score of 912 to finish third overall in the 11-team field. UNCG was consistent throughout the event, posting rounds of 305-304-303, improving each round. The Spartans surpassed 36-hole leader Richmond with the third lowest round of the day Monday. Seton Hall won the overall event with a 901 score while Georgetown was second with a 906 score.
Freshmen Kendall Dobbins (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) and Louisa Tichy (Germering, Germany/Max-Born Gymnasium) combined to lead the Spartans in their first career events, finishing in a tie for 14th place overall at 12-over par 228. Dobbins opened with a 3-over par 75 in round one before following up with a 77-76. Tichy had the same scores but in a different order, opening with a 76-77 before closing with a 3-over par 75 in the final round.
“The golf course was in great condition,” Dobbins said. “The greens were fun to play because they were sticking, allowing me to go for the pins. I had a lot of chances for birdies and had a lot of fun today. Coach Allyse was able to walk with me throughout the whole tournament, helping me through my first collegiate golf tournament. I cannot wait for our next match.”
Junior Lexi Kershaw (Winston-Salem, N.C./Catawba) was two shots behind in 18th place overall with a 14-over par 230 score. Kershaw posted two rounds of 7-over par 79 in rounds one and three sandwiched around an career-low even-par 72 in round two.
