GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's golf team moved up to 11th place overall at the end the Irish Creek Collegiate Saturday played at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis. The Spartans now head to the 2016 Southern Conference Championships April 24-26 at Pinehurst No. 9.
Joining the 75th-ranked Spartans in the field includes No. 6 Florida State, No. 14 Wake Forest, No. 24 North Carolina, No. 34 North Florida, No. 48 East Carolina, No. 50 SMU, No. 57 Kennesaw State, No. 76 VCU, No. 77 Charlotte, No. 79 UNCW, Davidson, Appalachian State, Dartmouth and Mercer.
The Spartans moved up two spots on the final day of the Irish Creek with their best round of the weekend. UNCG finished 40-over par 892 with rounds of 303-296-293. No. 14 Wake Forest came from behind to win the event with a 3-over par 855 with rounds of 287-281-287. Ryan Cole of James Madison ran away with the individual title with a 10-under par 203 (67-70-66), winning by seven stokes.
Junior Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) moved up 13 places on the final day to finish in a tie for 12th place overall. McGlone posted a 3-over par 216 score on the par-71 course. He opened with a 5-over par 76 in round one before an even-par 71 in round two. He saved his best for Sunday with a 2-under par 69 as he carded five birdies on the afternoon.
Senior Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) and sophomore Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) finished tied for 51st place overall with a 13-over par 226. Haithcock opened with a 78 before coming in with rounds of 73 and 75 to close out the event. Stockwell was consistent all weekend, posting rounds of 75-76-75, including three birdies in the final round.
Senior Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) moved up to 62nd place on the final day at 16-over par 229. Coalson posted his best round of the weekend with a 3-over par 74 after posting rounds of 79 and 76 to open the event. Freshman Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) rounded out the lineup with a 16-over par 229 with rounds of 74-79-76. Junior Riley Davis (Kinston, N.C./UNC Pembroke) played as an individual and finished 75th overall at 20-over par 233 (75-81-77).
