GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG sophomore men's golfer Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) finished tied for 18th to lead the Spartans at the Linger Longer Invitational hosted by Kennesaw State at the Great Waters course at Reynolds Lake. UNCG placed 10th in the field that included 11 teams ranked in the top 100 and four teams ranked in the top 25.
Stockwell posted his best round of the week Tuesday in the final round, carding a 1-under par 71. He notched two birdies, one bogey and 15 par scores in the final round to finish at 1-over par 217 for the week. He opened with a 2-over par 74 in round one before notching scores of 72 and 71 the last two days.
UNCG finished 10th overall with a 15-over par 879 score. The Spartans opened with a 287 round Sunday before turning in scores of 299 and 293. No. 12 Alabama won the team title with a 12-under par 852 (282-285-285) while Lee McCoy of Georgia won the individual title with a 9-under par 207 (70-67-70).
Junior Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) placed 32nd overall with a 4-over par 220. McGlone opened the week with an even-par 72 before posting a 3-over par 75 in round two and a 1-over par 73 in round three. He recorded 14 par scores and two birdies Tuesday. Freshman Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) finished tied for 33rd overall at 5-over par 221. Hendrix opened the event with a career-low 6-under par 66 before turning in scores of 78 and 77 to close out the week.
Senior Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) finished tied for 38th overall with a 6-over par 22. Haithcock also saved his best round for Tuesday, turning in an even-par 72 after opening with back-to-back rounds of 75. Senior Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) was consistent all week, notching three straight 77 scores to finish in 62nd place at 15-over par 231. Junior Riley Davis (Kinston, N.C./UNC Pembroke) also finished in 62nd place as an individual, posting rounds o 78-76-77.
Joining the 66th-ranked Spartans include No. 2 Georgia, No. 12 Alabama, No. 21 Virginia, No. 25 Purdue, No. 26 Baylor, No. 39 Augusta, No. 55 Louisville, No. 61 Kennesaw State, No. 78 Missouri, No. 82 Charlotte, South Alabama and Mercer. The Spartans return to the course April 1-3 at the Clemson Intercollegiate.
