Women's Golf Sits In Third Place After Day One At Bobby Nichols

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's golf team is tied for third place overall after the first round of the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate hosted by Tennessee Tech at the Highlands Course in Cookeville, Tenn. The Spartans have three players in the top 15 of the individual standings after 18 holes of play. Round two will be played Monday with a noon shotgun start. No live scoring is available at the event.

The Spartans are tied with tournament host Tennessee Tech for third overall with a 32-over par 316 score on the par-71 course. UNCG is just one shot behind second place Youngstown State (315) while Southern Mississippi leads the event with a 21-over par 305 score Sunday.

Sophomore Lexi Kershaw (Winston-Salem, N.C./Catawba) leads the Spartans after one round in a tie for seventh place. Kershaw posted a 6-over par 77 in the first round while Devon Spriddle of Southern Mississippi holds the individual lead with a 1-over par 72. Junior Kristin Powers (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) is tied for 11th overall after posting a 7-over par 78 in round one.

“Today was a day of consistency and committing to the shots,” Powers said. “This is a course that, as a team, we can do well on. It will be exciting to see what the next couple of days have in store for us.”

Freshman Natalia Asensio (Madrid, Spain/Cardenal Spinola) carded an 8-over par 79 in the first round to sit in a tie for 14th place overall. Redshirt freshman Savanna Mackie (Greensboro, N.C./Appalachian State) is tied for 27th overall with an 11-over par 82 while junior Maddi MacClurg (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) rounds out the lineup in 33rd place with a 12-over par 83.

Joining the Spartans in the field include host Tennessee Tech, Austin Peay, Carson Newman, Evansville, Florida Atlantic, Oakland, Radford, Southern Miss, Tennessee State, Western Illinois and Youngstown State on the par-71, 5,803-yard course.
