Chelsea Sumney Named Capital One Academic All-District
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG senior runner Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) has been selected to the Capital One Academic All-District III First Team for women's track and field/cross country, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday. Chelimo will now be entered with all other first team selections across the eight districts nationally and will be eligible for Academic All-America honors.
Sumney, a native of Washington, Pa., owns a 3.73 GPA in speech pathology. She finished second at the 2013 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 17:05.51, finishing just .03 seconds out of the title. She posted a UNCG-program record in the 5,000-meter distance with a time of 16:50.84 at the Flotrack Husky Classic.
Sumney placed third overall at the SoCon Cross Country Championships with a season-best time of 17:27.47 on the 5,000-meter course. She turned in a career-best time of 21:00.91 in the 6,000-meter distance at the NCAA Southeast Regional, finishing 15th overall, just outside a bid into the National Championship. She improved 16 spots and cut 10 seconds from her time at the 2012 cross country regional.
Sumney's Academic All-District honor marks the third straight year that UNCG track and field has been honored. Former Spartan Ashley Schnell earned Academic All-District accolades in both 2011 and 2012.
