GREENSBORO, NC – After more than 500 bouts, in a little over eight hours, the UNC Greensboro wrestling team advanced eight grapplers into day-two of the 2007 UNCG Southern Scuffle held at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center. As a team, the Spartans are currently in 15th-place with 25.5 points.
Seniors Jeff Hedges and Daren Burns along with junior Ryan Hsu fought their way through the championship bracket. All three will appear tomorrow morning in the championship quarterfinals. Five additional wrestlers, junior Kane Smith, sophomores Victor Hojilla and Mitchell Johnson, redshirt freshman Byron Sigmon and true freshman Mikal McKee advanced through to the fourth-round wrestlebacks.
Seeded seventh at 133 pounds, Hedges shutout Davidson’s Alex Radsky with a 9-0 decision in the Round of 32 and then followed that victory up with a 9-2 decision over Kyle Hutter of Old Dominion. He will face second-seeded Mack Reiter of Minnesota tomorrow morning in the championship quarterfinal round.
As the No. 3 seed for the 197-pound weight class, Burns made quick time through the brackets. He pinned Appalachian State’s John Allen Griswold in 5:25 in the Round of 32 and then hours later won a 12-2 decision over Ryan Allen of Boise State. Burns is currently ranked 12th nationally in the InterMat/NWCA/NWMA individual polls. He will take on the sixth-seed, David Mendoza of Old Dominion, tomorrow in the championship quarters.
UNCG’s heavyweight, Ryan Hsu also moved forward through the championship bracket. In the Round of 32 he defeated Boise State’s Nick Smith in a 3-2 decision and then in overtime, he won a grueling 3-1 decision over Pat Gilmore of Maryland. Tomorrow Hsu will face the No. 2 seed, Zach Hammond of Cornell.
In the fourth-round of wrestlebacks, Johnson (125 lbs.) will take on Frank Perelli of Cornell. At 165 lbs., Hojilla has Obie Simpson (unattached) and Byron Sigmon will face Matt Demichiel of Navy. McKee, the only UNCG freshman to make it through to the second day of the tournament, is pitted against Kyle Kiss (unattached) in the fourth round consolations. Kane Smith (197 lbs.) will face Robert Johnston of Navy in the same round.
No. 4 Minnesota leads the 28-team field with 53.5 points followed by No. 14 Edinboro with 42.5 points, Boise State in third with a score of 39.5, and No. 24 Old Dominion is in fourth with 38.5 points. No. 17 Cornell and No. 22 Maryland are tied for fifth with 37.5 points and Bloomsburg is in seventh with an even 36 points. Tied at eighth are Kent State and No. 21 Navy with a score of 34 points and No. 15 Hofstra rounds out the Top 10 with 33 points.
